Dear Colleague, We are forwarding you the second announcement and the registration form of the Ring Theory Conference to be held in Miskolc, Hungary, July 15-20, 1996. For your convenience we have included two versions of the announcement: one in ordinary text format, and one in (Plain) TeX format. We would appreciate if you could acknowledge receipt of this message: this would save us the mailing cost, as we will send the announcement also by ordinary mail to those addresses from which we shall not have received an acknowledgemnent within two weeks. We would also like to ask you to post this announcement at your department so that other members who may have not received our letter could also learn about the event. Thanking you for your help, sincerely yours, Laszlo Marki for the organizers *************************************************************************** --------------------------------------------------------------- | Ring Theory Conference | | Miskolc, Hungary, July 15--20, 1996 | | A satellite conference of the | Second European Congress of Mathematics | (Budapest, July 21--27, 1996) | | Second Announcement --------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Site. -------- The conference will take place at the University of Miskolc. Miskolc, a town of over 200.000 inhabitants, lies in the North-East of Hungary, about 200 km from Budapest, at the foot of the Bukk mountains. The outskirts of Miskolc include many beautiful places, among others the spa Miskolc--Tapolca, at a 15-minute walking distance from the University -- this is where we have made all hotel reservations (except the dormitories, which are on the campus). Summer in Hungary is usually hot and dry but exceptions are possible. Unless one comes by train or by car from Poland--Slovakia or Romania or Ukraine, Miskolc is best to reach from Budapest. Trains go roughly at 2-hour intervals, and it takes 2 to 3 hours to cover the distance. 2. Scientific program. ---------------------- The conference is intended to be a major event in ring theory, giving information about recent progress in several branches of the theory. We are making strong efforts to raise funds for ensuring participation of a large number of colleagues from poor countries. The program will begin on Monday in the morning and end on Saturday presumably at noon; preferred arrival on Sunday (14th) afternoon, suggested departure on Sunday (21st) morning. Half of the time available will be devoted to invited 50-minute addresses. Here is the list of main speakers and preliminary titles: W.W. Short talks. --------------- Participants are invited to contribute 20-minute talks. Please indicate wishes about the scheduling of your talk (if any). Depending on their number, short talks will be given in parallel sessions. Those who wish to use overhead projectors are asked to bring their own transparencies. 4. Abstracts ------------ of talks will be distributed to all participants. They should not exceed one page, should be prepared -- if possible -- following the enclosed instructions, and received by May 31. 5. Proceedings. --------------- We plan to publish proceedings of the conference. The publisher has not been decided yet, negotiations are in process. We ask those who wish to submit a paper to indicate a tentative title and length. All papers will be refereed. Depending on funding, participants may get the volume(s) at a reduced rate. Participants are strongly encouraged to submit their manuscript at the conference. A firm deadline (September 30) for submission will be set for later submissions. 6. Registration. ---------------- The participation fee covers conference materials including the abstracts, free lunches from Monday to Saturday, a banquet and an excursion. The participation fee is 100 US$ if sent by April 30 and 135 US$ (20000 HUF) afterwards. A reduced rate of 50 US$ (or 65 US$ after April 30) can be granted for students and unemployed or for participants from 'economically troubled countries'. Reduced rate must be applied for in advance, only students may get it on the spot. Participants from countries with strong restrictions on money transfers abroad may pay the fee on the spot if this circumstance is indicated by April 30 and their request is approved by the organizers. Accompanying persons. --------------------- Participation fee is 50 US$ before and 65 US$ after April 30 if lunch is requested, 20$ resp. 30$ without lunch (this covers banquet and excursion). No participation fee is required for children below 12 years of age, except for the costs of lunch, which can be paid upon arrival. ***** Early registration -- via E-mail -- is highly appreciated! ***** 7. Accommodation. ----------------- We have made agreements with three hotels in Miskolc--Tapolca. We have reserved two of them completely and half of the rooms in the third, partly at considerably reduced prices. Most rooms in these hotels (and in Miskolc--Tapolca altogether) are two-bed rooms, and some apartments (for couples with one or two children) are also available. Here is a table of prices for double rooms including breakfast. Rooms in hotels Flora and Park are equipped with shower, those in Juno with bath. All rooms in Juno and the more expensive ones in Park come with refrigerator, TV-set and telephone. In Hotel Juno only a limited number of rooms will be available for single occupancy price. Apartments are also in a comparable price category. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Hotel Double occupancy Single occupancy ---------------------------------------------------------------- Flora 3600 HUF -- 24 US$ 3300 HUF -- 22 US$ ---------------------------------------------------------------- Juno 5400 HUF -- 36 US$ 4500 HUF -- 30 US$ ---------------------------------------------------------------- Park 4500 HUF -- 30 US$ 4000 HUF -- 27 US$ 6500 HUF -- 44 US$ 6000 HUF -- 40 US$ ---------------------------------------------------------------- The student dormitory is rather poorly equipped, with common showers and lavatories. A dormitory room for two persons costs 1000 HUF (=7 US$) without breakfast. Those wishing to be lodged at one of these places should send their order to the organizers on the enclosed registration form. Hotel reservations (but not dormitory) will be considered only if a 50 US$ deposit is sent together with the registration fee. We shall allocate rooms rougly on a 'first come first served' basis; please indicate a second choice, too. Prices may be subject to some change. Without reservations, rooms may be available at a higher rate. 8. Payment. ----------- Please send the money by bank transfer to an account of OTP (Hungarian National Savings Bank) at foreign banks shown in the following list: Name of bank Acc. no. of OTP -------------------------------------------------------------------- Bank of America, San Francisco 3-46-62584 First Chicago International, New York 1023792 Chase Manhattan Bank, New York 001-1-388 782 Bank of Montreal, Montreal 1039-984 Bank of Tokyo, Tokyo 653-0431389 Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Sydney 99-4237001 Hungarian International Bank, London 065501010 Union Bank of Switzerland, Zurich 68.528.05.Y Dresdner Bank, Frankfurt/M 8.178.732 Stadtsparkasse Munchen, Munchen 300.111 Societe Generale, Paris 00101294032 Generale Bank, Brussel 26304 Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie 50005/018 Lombarde, Milano Banco Bilbao Vizcaya, Madrid 089723750 La Caixa, Barcelona 5660927261 Den Norske Bank, Oslo 5001.02.05457 -------------------------------------------------------------------- *** The transfer order must contain, as a remark, the instruction: *** For Algebra Association, 11707024-55555555/B75009 ********************************************************************** Should you have problems, you can send the money directly to OTP (S.W.I.F.T.: OTPVHUHB), account nr. 11707024-55555555, with the remark: for Algebra Association, account nr. B75009. Please try the other way first because this one goes with long delays. You are expected to pay for the transfer up to an OTP account of your choice. You may pay the equivalent of US$ prices in the home currency of the bank chosen from the above list. Refunds. -------- Before June 15, 80% of the paid registration fee (minus transfer costs) is refundable. After June 15 there is no refund. Hotel deposits are fully refundable if the order is cancelled before June 1, unless there is a high number of cancellations. All refunds will be handled in August. 9. Lunch -------- will be provided, from Monday to Saturday, for all participants in two or three restaurants at a walking distance from the University. Please indicate on the registration form if you follow some diet (say, vegetarian); we will try to meet your wishes. 10. Excursion. -------------- On Wednesday afternoon there will be an excursion to the Aggtelek stalactite and stalagmite cave at an hour's drive from Miskolc. This is a huge and spectacular cave, with 21 km overall length the second largest of its kind in Europe. Of course, we shall visit only part(s) of it. No special equipment is needed, but you are well advised to bring along a sweater. 11. Computer algebra. ---------------------- In case of interest, we may organize a session about computer software developped for ring theoretic manipulations. PC-s will be available in very limited numbers on the spot. 12. Third announcement ---------------------- will be in mail around June 15. Please, let us know your address at that time. By the end of March a Web site will be set at http://www.math-inst.hu/conferences/rings/home.html containing updated information about the conference (e.g. list of registered participants). 13. Support. ------------ Partly depending on our success in raising funds, a limited amount of financial support may be avaliable for participants from 'economically troubled countries'. Those who wish to ask for such support are requested to send a short application by March 15. This application should contain: full name and address (including E-mail and FAX number if available), age, scientific degree, instituiton, position held, number of publications, bibliographical data of five most important papers and what kind of support the applicant would like to get: waiving the registration fee, free accomodation, travel support (specify the amount). We would appreciate getting these applications both by E-mail and regular mail. A decision will probably be made early in May. In any case, we intend to inform applicants about the outcome as soon as possible. Participants getting free accomodation will normally be lodged in double rooms, partly in the dormitory. -- We encourage everyone to apply also for other funds since we have only limited resources. Applying for less support may improve your chances. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS Abstracts should be printed or typed and be of good quality, not exceeding one page. The typing area is 6.5 inches times 9 inches (16.5 cm times 22.8 cm). The name of the authors (each followed by a postal address) and the title of the talk should appear (in this order) on the top of the abstract. In case of multiple authors an asterisque should indicate the speaker. In this header 3 cm space on the left hand side should be left for additional information. Theorems, corollaries etc. should be typed using italics or underlined letters. A reference list may be included at the end of the text. Authors (especially those using TeX, Latex or AmSTeX) are encouraged to submit also the file of their abstracts (either by E-mail or on a floppy disk -- IBM PC or Macintosh format; please make sure that your mailer does not use any nonstandard encoding of the text). In each case, however, we need also a hardcopy of the abstract. Receipt of the abstract will be acknowledged by E-mail or with the third announcement. Please, send your abstracts to the following address: Laszlo Marki Mathematical Institute H-1364 Budapest, Pf. 127 Hungary FAX: (36-1)-117-7166 For E-mail, use: rings@math-inst.hu Here is a simple example for the format of the abstract. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A.L. Gebra, Department of Pure Mathematics, University of Western Oceania, Capital City, Oceania P.I.R. Ing(*) Department of Mechanics, Technical University, Portland, Eurasia and Department of Mathematics, John Kirby University, Midlandtown, MT 34567, United States of Antarctic A generalization of a theorem by R. Module The aim of the talk is to give a generalized version of a well-known theorem by R. Module (cf. [1]). The notion of light rings is introduced. We also define heavy and portable modules in terms of flatness properties of the corresponding purse structure. Then the following theorem holds. THEOREM 1. Let R be an arbitrary ring with 1. The following conditions are equivalent: (i) R is light; (ii) every heavy module over R is portable. As a consequence of this theorem we show that a wide class of (associative) rings appearing in Lie theory is light. In turn this will imply the heaviness of certain Lie-algebra representations. The name of the authors (each followed by a postal address) and the title of the talk should appear (in this order) on the top of the abstract. In case of multiple authors an asterisque should indicate the speaker. In this header 3 cm space on the left hand side should be left for additional information. Theorems, corollaries etc. should be typed using {\it italics} or $\underline{\rm\vphantom{y}underlined}$ letters. A reference list may be included at the end of the text. Authors (especially those using \TeX, Latex or AmSTeX) are encouraged to submit also the file of their abstracts (either by E-mail or on a floppy disk -- IBM PC or Macintosh format; please make sure that your mailer does not use any nonstandard encoding of the text). In each case, however, we need also a hardcopy of the abstract. Receipt of the abstract will be acknowledged by E-mail or with the third announcement. Please, send your abstracts to the following address: \medskip \centerline{\vbox{% \hbox{L\'aszl\'o M\'arki}% \hbox{Mathematical Institute}% \hbox{H-1364 Budapest, Pf. 127}% \hbox{Hungary} \hbox{FAX: (36-1)-117-7166}}} \medskip For E-mail, use: \qquad {\tt rings@math-inst.hu} Here is a simple example for the format of the abstract. \bigskip\line{\hrulefill} %******************************************************** % Format definitions for the abstract * %******************************************************** \long\def\theorem#1#2{\medbreak\noindent{\smallcaps Theorem #1}% \enspace\ignorespaces{\it #2}\medbreak} \def\Hom{\mathop{\rm Hom}\nolimits} % Hom in \rm type \def\refmark#1{[#1]} % references \def\ref#1{\smallbreak\item{\refmark{#1}}} % one item of the references \def\references{\bigbreak{\smallcaps References}\smallskip} \newbox\headbox \def\abstract{\setbox\headbox=\vbox{}} \def\endabstract{\medskip\line{\hrulefill}} % % \author{name}{address} % \def\author#1#2{\setbox\headbox=\vbox{\hsize=5 true in \unvbox\headbox\vskip3pt% \noindent\hangindent\parindent\hangafter1 {\bf #1}, #2\par}} % % \talk{title} % \def\talk#1{\setbox\headbox=\vbox{\hsize=5 true in% \unvbox\headbox\vskip5pt% \noindent\hangindent\parindent\hangafter1{\bf #1}}} \long\def\head{\bigbreak\line{\hfil\box\headbox}\medbreak} %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% \abstract % \author{A.L. Module} \head The aim of the talk is to give a generalized version of a well-known theorem by R. Module (cf. \refmark{1}). The notion of light rings is introduced. We also define heavy and portable modules in terms of flatness properties of the corresponding purse structure. Then the following theorem holds. \theorem{1.} {Let $R$ be an arbitrary ring with $1$. The following conditions are equivalent: \item{(i)} $R$ is light; \item{(ii)} every heavy module over $R$ is portable.\par } As a consequence of this theorem we show that a wide class of (associative) rings appearing in Lie theory is light. In turn this will imply the heaviness of certain Lie-algebra representations. \references \ref{1} R.
