ICOR'97
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE THEORY OF RADICALS AND RINGS

               SECOND (AND FINAL) ANNOUNCEMENT
CALL FOR PAPERS AND REGISTRATION FORM

The sixth conference in the tri-annual series on the Theory
of Radicals and Rings will be held at the University of Port
Elizabeth (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) during the week 7-11
July 1997. Arrivals and early registration should be on
Sunday 6 July. The scientific programme will start on the
Monday and should conclude on the Friday in the afternoon.

SITE AND VENUES
The University of Port Elizabeth (also called the Campus by
the Sea) is located on the southern outskirts of city in the
suburb Summerstrand. You may read more about the university
on the Internet, http://www.upe.ac.za
Port Elizabeth (PE) is the fifth largest city in the country
with about 1 million people in its metropolitan area. It is
just more than 1000 km south of Johannesburg and 800 km east
of Cape Town. There are sufficiently many flights by various
carriers between PE and these two cities. Daily bus and
train service between these cities are also available.

On arrival in PE by plane, bus or train (or boat),
participants will be met and transported to their place of
accommodation. If you intend to arrive by car, please
indicate as such on your registration form and you will be
provided with directions to the campus before your arrival.

The conference office on the campus where registration will
take place on the Sunday is in the foyer of Veritas Annex
(this is the student hostel on the campus where participants
will stay) and on the Monday it is in room 07-02-25. The
format of all room numbers on the campus is: building number
-level number -room number. Thus, the conference office is
in building 7 (also called the Mathematics and Psychology
Building), on the second floor, room number 25. All
lectures, as well as the opening of the conference, will be
in 05-OG-05 (building 05 is also called the SANLAM Building).

LANGUAGE
The conference language is English. Please note that South
Africa has 11 official languages of which English is one and
will suffice in most instances.

VISA REQUIREMENTS AND INOCULATIONS
Please check with your travel agent what your visa and
inoculation requirements for South Africa will be. If you
need a formal letter of invitation to the conference for your
visa application, it will be provided on request.
People intending to visit the Kruger National Park should
take precautions against malaria.

CURRENCY
The SA currency is the Rand (denoted by R) which consits of
100 cents. The present exchange rate is : 1 US dollar is
R4-60. Banks accept all major traveller's cheques. The
major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard and Diners card) are
widely accepted by hotels, shops, etc. There is a bank
(Volkskas Bank) on the campus where money can be exchanged.
The banking hours are Monday to Friday 09:00-14:00.

CLIMATE IN JULY
July is in the middle of our winter. Being a coastal city,
the weather can change very quickly varying from hot and
sunny to cold, windy and wet. Some statistics for the month
of July during the last 20 years are (temperatures are in
degrees Celsius): Ave daily temp 14, ave minimum temp 9 and
the ave maximum temp 19. The lowest and highest temperatures
recorded are -0,3 and 33 respectively. On average there are 7
hours of sunshine per day, 4-5 days with more than 1mm of
rain and the average rainfall for the month is 44mm.
There is no central heating on the campus, in fact central
heating anywhere in PE is highly exceptional. You are advised
to bring warm clothing and a raincoat and/or an umbrella.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME
There will be five invited main talks of 50 min each by:
GF Birkenmeier (Lafayette): Essential covers of radical
  classes and torsion classes;
E Jespers (St John's): Noetherian semigroup algebras;
K Kaarli (Tartu): Radicals of nonzero-symmetric near-rings;
J van den Berg (Pietermaritzburg): Torsion preradicals - a
  tool for studying rings, and
R Wiegandt (Budapest): Rings decisive in radical theory.

ICOR97 is a very special meeting as one of our distinguished
participants celebrates his 65th birthday in September. He
was one of the founders of this series of conferences and is
one of the few people who has attended all these conferences
since the first in Eger (1982). I am refering, of course, to
Prof Richard Wiegandt, whose contributions to the general
radical theory not only popularised this subject, but also
highlighted the strength of the techniques of radical theory
outside the traditional algebraic fields. As all of his many
co-authors can testify, he has been and still is, the roving
ambassador par excellence for general radical theory. As a
tribute to him for his contributions to this field, R. Mlitz
(Vienna) will give a 50 min overview of Wiegandt's work.

Participants are invited to contribute 20 minute talks. It
is not anticipated that parallel sessions will be required.
Lecturers are encouraged to use the blackboards in the
lecture hall. An overhead projector will be available -
please supply your own transparencies and pens.
Only on arrival will you be provided with a programme - be
prepared to give your talk on the first day.

ABSTRACTS
Please provide the organizers with a typed abstract of your
talk, not exceeding one page. Preferably we would like to
receive it together with your registration form, but if this
is not possible, not later than 31 May.

PROCEEDINGS
The proceedings of the conference will be published as a
special issue of Quaestiones Mathematicae, the journal of the
South African Mathematical Society. Submissions will be
subjected to the usual strict refereeing procedures of this
journal. Contributors should submit their manuscripts to one
of the organizers at the conference. If this is not possible,
the firm deadline for later submissions is 30 September 1997.

ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation for the conference is in a student hostel,
Veritas Annex, on the campus. All rooms are double, but also
available for single occupancy (subject to availability) at
the same price, with common bathrooms (separate for the
different sexes though). The rooms are basic and you should
provide your own towels. The price per person, including
breakfast, is R65-00 per day. We will not have any lunch or
dinner facilities available at the hostel. You will have to
pay a small deposit for your room key which will be refunded
on the return of the key. A deposit of US dollars 20 per
person for confirmation of your hostel room is required with
your registration form. The balance is payable on arrival
(in Rands).
There are two alternative options for accommodation:
We have made reservations at a three star hotel (Summerstrand
Inn) close to the campus (2 km) at reduced rates. These rooms
have private bathroom, TV and airconditioning. The prices
are: R240 for a single room and R300 for a double room per
day, breakfast included.
Several Bed and Breakfast rooms are available at private
houses in the Summerstrand area (2-3 km from the campus).
Prices for these vary between R100-R180 for a single room and
R150-R240 for a double room per day, breakfast included.

Your accommodation requirements must be indicated on your
registration form, the organizers will make the necessary
reservations (but you are responsible for settling the bill).

REGISTRATION
The Registration Office (in the foyer of Veritas Annex) will
be open on the Sunday 08:00-22:00 and Monday morning 08:00-
12:00 in room 07-02-25. All outstanding fees must be paid at
this time.
The registration fee is US dollars 90 per person for
